Curtis Sellers
Tempe, Arizona / St. Louis, Missouri
Curtis Sellers is an oboist and oboe teacher residing in Tempe, Arizona. Since entering higher education in 2017, he has worked to bring works that are unfettered, human, vibrant, and inclusive to his local community. In his teaching he has sought out a pedagogical style that gives students their own agency to teach themselves by finding patterns within their music and lives, simplifying otherwise complicated passages, and listening for how they can bring further nuance to their unique sound. He does all of this to break down the many barriers real or imagined that exist in "classical" music whether it be an audience finding certain kinds of music unapproachable or a student finding the self confidence they need to succeed.
The oboe itself seemed to be an inevitability from a young age when he was drawn to its unique sound and rarity when compared with other instruments. During his high school years the many mentors he had in his youth orchestra, school band, chamber music group, and among his peers inspired him to continue his dream of sharing his musical voice.
A recent inspiration to Curtis has been the discovery of works that are programmatic, tied to art that inspires him, or express the sometimes extreme dynamics of the human condition. He currently plays with ensembles at ASU; sQuint, his graduate wind quintet; and the many regional orchestras of the greater Phoenix area. |
